  • Sophia Laiqi is a New York-based artist, born in 1999 in Mount Kisco, NY. Her photographic work revolves around her ongoing search to explore her identity as an Albanian-American woman.

  • Growing up, Sophia Laiqi never felt like her pale, ginger-haired self fit into her Albanian culture. With the intention of understanding why her family had to partake in certain misogynistic practices, she had to find out where they came from. After researching her ethnic origins, Laiqi felt inspired to explore the beauty and hardships that Albanian women have experienced. In flok kuqe, Laiqi challenges gender norms embedded into her culture, while trying to find her place as an Albanian American woman. Through photographing the women figures in her life with a red filter over them, and placing them alongside her late grandfather’s archived photographs manipulated in black and white, the artist creates a space for two generations to conversate.
