Magali Duzant’s (MFA Photo ’14) project 2,906.6 miles or 3 hours was included in the NY Times list of top projects to see at this year’s Dumbo Arts Festival.
2,906 Miles or 3 Hours is a large-scale projection of a California sunset. It questions the act of looking as a matter of faith and belief, for here the sun has already set and yet appears in the night sky to be doing so again. In this sense the sun is forced to set simultaneously on both coasts. We become, like Kepler-16b, a planet with two suns. It is intended as a grand, romantic gesture to two sides of the country but also as a sheer momentous experience to take control of something so routine and yet powerfully moving. The sunset is still something we turn to, photograph, watch and wait out.
