CUP is seeking a programmer to collaborate on our “Make Your Own Urban Investigation” app.
CUP seeks a programmer to develop a tablet app that lets educators use CUP’s methods to bring high school students out of the classroom to learn about how the city works. We’re looking for a programmer with experience working with PhoneGap or another similar cross-platform mobile framework who is interested in a deep collaborative process with CUP and a designer.

CUP is a nonprofit organization that uses the power of design and art to increase meaningful civic engagement, particularly among historically under-represented communities. CUP collaborates with designers, educators, advocates, students, and communities to make educational tools that demystify complex policy and planning issues. We believe that increasing our understanding of how these systems work is the first step to better, more equitable, and more diverse community participation.

How much work will it be?
This will be a very collaborative process. We imagine we’ll have an intensive first week together, working 40 hours as a team. After that, we expect to meet once every two weeks, from February through June, 2014.

Tell me more…
Urban Investigations are hands-on afterschool programs that use collaborative research and design to enable high school students to explore questions about how the city works. Urban Investigations take on questions like “Where does my garbage go?” or “Who owns the Internet?” The “Make Your Own Urban Investigation” apps will break down CUP’s methods and help educators create CUP-style youth education projects outside of New York City. The apps will be distributed to public high school teachers, independent teaching artists, and arts and educational institutions across the country.

This call is for a programmer to work on the first app with us, which covers interview techniques—why interviews are important, how to train students to conduct them, and how to get the most out of them. But we’d like to work with you on future apps in the series if you are interested.
The ideal candidate will have:

· Expertise working with a client and visual designers in an agile way, incorporating feedback from both CUP and stakeholders in short, iterative cycles
· Experience working with clients in a creative environment
· Experience with PhoneGap or another similar cross-platform mobile framework, as we want to make the “Make Your Own Urban Investigation” app available on both iOS and Android devices.

In terms of scope, there will be roughly 25 unique, interactive views. Each view will have custom user interface with animations. There will be embedded audio and video content, and some online video content via youtube. The app will not require any user accounts or social integration. We are open to slicing assets in-house from the master design files, or having the programmer slice assets (in your proposal, please specify which you prefer. Our preference is for the developer to do the slicing so it can better match your own development approach).

To apply, please email application materials as a single PDF document of no more than 3MB to apply@welcometoCUP.org with the subject line “Programmer.” Your single-PDF application should include:

· A cover letter detailing your interest in working on this project
· A resume
· A proposed budget
· Examples of past projects as images, links to websites, or links to video files
· For each sample project, please identify what technologies were used, and how each project is similar to the scope of work here—in terms of team, working approach and potential challenges/risks. Bullet points are fine; this should not be longer than a paragraph per project.

Applications are due Friday, January 10th.

CUP is an equal opportunity employer and strongly encourages people of color, women, LGBTQ, and disabled candidates to apply.
