Indigenous Rising: Changing The Way We See Native America
May 2nd 4:30-6pm
66 West 12th, Room 404
This event is a pre-commencement celebration to honor Indigenous students who have successfully completed an undergraduate or graduate degree through unyielding determination at The New School. This gathering embraces the value of community and scholarship. Celebrated photographer and storyteller Matika Wilbur of the Swinomish and Tulalip Tribes will be in attendance to speak about her recent project PROJECT 562. The book is a photographic and narrative celebration of contemporary Native American life and cultures, alongside an in-depth examination of issues that Native people face. The book is the culmination of a decade-long art and storytelling endeavor, and a moving love letter to Indigenous Americans, containing hundreds of stunning portraits and compelling personal narratives of contemporary Native people. A vital contribution from an incomparable artist, PROJECT 562 inspires, educates, and truly changes the way we see Native America.
Reception to follow. This event is part of The Indigenous Rising Symposium & the Parsons School of Fashion Vision Speaker Series. Presented by Indigenous Rising, The School of Fashion at Parsons, & American Indian Community House.
