What makes some marks so damn good ? And – more importantly – what makes a few of them truly great ?

Angus Hyland from Pentagram London got to the bottom of it. After a lot of deep thinking and hard looking, he kindly wrote a book to guide the rest of us through the jungle of symbols that we designers have created over the years.

Symbol features more than 1300 marks organized into groups and sub-groups according to their visual characteristics. We won’t cover all 1300 on the 22nd, but we’ll come close.

Angus will provide a comprehensive intro to the topic at hand, then synthesize the personal favorites of three of our symbol masters: Stephen Doyle, Steff Geissbuhler and Su Mathews. After that, we’ll open it up to you for questions.

There’s a lot of ground to cover. Get there early and bring a notebook.
