Caiying and Lizhang

Machines have replaced manual labor, and we cannot live without various electronic technology products. In this situation, I found that my grandparents were unable to do some things independently because they don’t use electronics. My original intention in making this work was to observe their lives, which are very different from ours, and to understand what they need. But I found that they were satisfied with their daily lives and were waiting calmly for death, they would discuss the cemetery they had chosen for themselves at the dinner table as if they were talking about how to pick out clothes. They were like retired martial arts masters, because they have experienced the poverty and ruin of China and the rise and wealth of the country. They have experienced the Cultural Revolution and globalization. They experienced SARS and COVID.19 pandemics. In the world of full network coverage, they are the last corner of the network model weakness in history.

Through photography, film, philosophy, and multimedia elements, the Parsons MFA Photography class of 2022 offers viewers time to pause: if we are the purveyors of change in a world, what do we do with this responsibility? Moving from microscopic, individualized experiences into more macro observations about culture writ large and the physical space we occupy, Still, And does not ask for answers, but gives something far more valuable: an open space to think, to choose, to be in progress and imperfect.
