Last year I rented a car and drove 350 miles west of my Bushwick apartment, to a remote New York pioneer oil town strangely named after the Venezuelan independence hero. In Bolivar, New York, a town that has been treated like a colony within the borders of the United States, I attempted to stage Bolivar’s ideas on South American subjugation. From the south I bring Simon Bolivar’s utopian rhetoric and sculptural visage to decaying small-town America.
