Live2D Research + Conception: Virtual Avatars

Bringing a 2D character illustration to life, using face tracking software you can become and control what was once a still image.

My thesis has been following my personal research into using the software Live2D to design and make virtual avatars. Live2D is an animation software where you can rig and animate static illustrations, similar to using animation techniques like puppeting. A byproduct of Live2D is its compatibility with face tracking software, bringing illustrated characters to life with the use of a webcam or AR camera. Having the accessible technology to use virtual avatars whether in personal use, or a zoom call where you don’t want to show your face, these avatars and characters have opened a space for creativity, fun, and expressing oneself in a personal way.
