We’re At, Like, The Edge of History
These paintings as art objects center around the aesthetic and historic convergence of the Baroque art period and 1970s disco culture to formulate an entirely new universe, aesthetic, and contemporary meaning as a form of escapism from lockdown.
.
The themes of this work center around hedonism and the idea of play as a sort of perseverance. Combining the ideas of disco with a baroque academic style of painting allowed the creation of a new aesthetic through visual and cultural meshing and allow space to create a character both outside of and deeply influenced by myself. The subject of these images represents a piece of myself that tried to celebrate everyday within a fantasy world while living in isolation. I hope this work allows us to both process and step away from the chaos of now through hedonistic subjects, and to joyfully imagine other versions of ourselves and each other. Even though the world is uncertain, it is not yet tragic, and these works represent just one of endless combinations of imagined futures and reimagined pasts.
