Words With Wings

“Words With Wings” is an animated short film based on my immigration journey from China to the United States.

After moving to the United States from China with her mother, eight-year-old Peiyi finds herself in a world where she cannot understand or communicate with anyone. While her award-winning novelist father has once instilled in her a passion for storytelling, Peiyi’s writing that has once taken her to the skies every day has suddenly been brought down to the ground. Without the ability to communicate, she struggles with both her schoolwork and connecting with her peers and finds herself resenting her Chinese culture.

With themes of familial love, creativity, and cultural values, “Words With Wings” dives into the mind of a young immigrant girl as she tackles a new language and learns how to communicate again—all the while gradually nurturing her passion and finding her identity in our multicultural world.
