“Placements” is a collection of 15 different paintings that I’ve made for 15 different peoples’ natal charts. Natal charts are a belief within astrology and the zodiac philosophy that the pattern of the stars when you’re born dictates your values, personality, and lifestyle as a person; with each placement of each planet indicating a specific aspect of who you are.The idea is that in creating this birth chart painting I’ve conveyed their own personality or even perhaps “spirit” through a symbolic portrait of sorts. Through both research and intuition I’ve developed a language of flowers, crystals, colors, and other motifs to represent the effects of different planetary aspects. Using this system of symbols, I’ve created fifteen pieces that act as symbolic “portraits” of fifteen different people I know. I tend to work mostly in surrealism and realism, with my work consisting of relatively traditional portraits and other natural subject matter so I have enjoyed the familiar nature of this project. My completed thesis is going to be a glossy hard-covered coffee table book titled “Placements: Paintings of Natal Charts.”
