  • The spiral represents evolution and growth of the spirit. It is a symbol of change and development.

The Spiral is a trio of clay sculptures that depict spiritual growth. I drew inspiration from the 60s psychedelic counterculture. Taking people’s experiences and bringing them into a physical art form. I divided a psychedelic trip into three parts. Each represented by the sculptures form, color, and expression.

I use nature as a metaphor to explain the state of this character’s mind, from lifeless grass to a blooming crown. The first sculpture is representative of someone who is depressed or anxiety-ridden. Trapped in one’s mind, a cage created by the character is being stuck in a negative way of thinking. The second sculpture depicts the climax of a trip: the vivid colors dissolving of self, and unraveling of the mind. Inside the spiraled head, you can see flowers beginning to bud. This represents a new way of thought and new beginnings. They represent a fertile mind free from depression, anxiety, and other ailments of the mind. The last sculpture represents rebirth and tranquility. The flowers in full bloom are used to show growth and a beautiful state of mind. This is a story of transformation.
