  • The commodification of queerness

  • This work is about the disappearance and corporate commercialization of queer spaces and communities. The codification of queer culture by corporate interests normalizes queerness in a harmful way. Places that used to be hubs for queer life have been drained of their uniqueness, liveliness, and ability to cultivate community. Rainbow capitalism is many times harmful to the LGBTQ community at large. Corporations that have “LGBTQ friendly” ideals, make LGBTQ merchandise, and sponsor queer events oftentimes, support anti-queer policymakers, and governments in the United States and abroad. The commodification of queerness fails to make any progress for the queer community. While exploiting, displacing, and harming the most vulnerable people in the queer community. This work is meant to celebrate and look at a non-corporate queer life, in both imagined and historical images.
