Overcoming the Ordinary
My illustrations explore the battle between the ordinary and the decorative.
Throughout my practice, I’ve always been very drawn to flowers. This is where I drew most of my interest, specifically from the decorative arts of Western history. In the 18th century, floral designs took on a new identity throughout Europe: prominent in art, fashion, and interior spaces – specifically in France. In this period of time, flowers had become a necessity for the people and the objects surrounding them. I aspire in my work, to the same goal, to bring embellishment and romanticism to a present day environment. My illustrations explore the battle between the ordinary and the decorative. I specifically focus on flowers, and how their qualities dominate material and physical settings. These explorations show how the decorative can overtake even the most mundane and ubiquitous aspects of life.
