My Steps

Jackson Chen is a Chinese photographer and communication designer based both in Shenzhen and New York.

My Steps is an immersive multitrack film that investigates how my experience of living in various cultural environments has influenced my cultural identity. To gather the shots for the film, I revisited the paths which I used to take to the different schools that I have gone to. Each shot in the highest track reveals an environmental detail that is associated with a certain moment in my childhood memory. Besides synchronous environmental sounds, the film is also accompanied by the audio of me reading a letter that my father wrote to me on my eighteenth birthday. By utilizing the power of nostalgia, I invite viewers to reflect on how our familiar cultural environments serve as the anchors that position us in a globalizing world.
