City of No Illusion

Sydney Herod is a documentary photographer from Westchester, New York. Much of her work is inspired by her hometown and the people who live there.

“City of No Illusion” is a collection of photographs that shows my relationship of my dad’s hometown of Buffalo, New York and how I place myself in the different environments. Buffalo is a six-hour drive from me currently and my dad and I have been visiting since I was a baby. I am specifically documenting the similarities and differences when I am returning to the different homes of my family. The photographs show how I interact with these places I return to and what belongs in that space. The different homes include my grandmother and my uncles’ home. “City of No Illusion” centers around my family in Buffalo and I am documenting the overall changes in environment while also finding the similarities of the variety of locations from my childhood.
