The Aperture Foundation, in collaboration with the School of Art, Media, and Technology at Parsons the New School for Design, is pleased to present an artist talk with Ben Lowy. An award-winning photojournalist, Lowy has embraced new technology and mediums to promote stories. Lowy’s work from Libya and Afghanistan has been hailed as forward-thinking in its use not only of camera phones, but also social media platforms. Lowy will discuss his work and the practice of shooting with a camera phone in conflict zones and in the United States, as well as the advantages and limitations of using the medium. Recently Lowy’s camera-phone image of Hurricane Sandy graced the cover of Time magazine, the first camera-phone image to ever be so featured.

Benjamin Lowy received a BFA from Washington University in St. Louis in 2002 and began his career covering the Iraq War in 2003. Since then he has covered major stories worldwide. Lowy has received awards from World Press Photo, POYi, PDNCommunication ArtsAmerican Photography, and the Society for Publication Design. His work from Iraq, Darfur, and Afghanistan has been included in exhibitions at the Tate Modern, London; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; and Les Recontres d’Arles, France, as well as in the recent survey “War/Photography: Images of Armed Conflict and Its Aftermath,” organized by the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. In 2011, Lowy’s work was selected by William Eggleston to win the Duke University Center for Documentary Studies/Honickman First Book Prize in Photography. In 2012, Lowy was awarded the Magnum Foundation Emergency fund to continue his work in Libya and he received the International Center of Photography (ICP) Infinity Award for Photojournalism.

This event is free for students with I.D., and Aperture supporters at the $250 level and above.
