Jan. 31st – Made in China: an exhibition of the MFA Photography student experience in Beijing and Pingyao
Brooklyn Fire Proof
119 Ingraham Street
Brooklyn, NY 11237
Opening Reception: January 31, 2014, 7-10pm
Parsons The New School for Design, in conjunction with Brooklyn Fire Proof is pleased to announce Made in China a group show of MFA students responding to their time in China. Made in China is a follow up to a corresponding exhibition that the students were a part of during the Pingyao International Photography Festival in Pingyao, China.
PIP, as the event is nicknamed, features contributions by 2,200 photographers, including more than 200 from over seas. Pingyao is a Unesco World Heritage site and during the festival images were shown in venues all over the ancient walled city, including old factories, warehouses, and temples.
The work of the artists in this exhibition is influenced by ideas and experiences of “China” as they exist and live across many borders. Although this exhibition takes up a term and a terrain that is both politically and geographically located, this exhibition nevertheless foregrounds strategies of translation that are more widely experienced as a global condition.
Participating artists include: Craig Callison, Alison C. Chen, Shiang-Jiun Chen, Xiao Chen, Daniel A. Cherrin, Magali Duzant, Anthony Flanagan, Michelle Gevint, Lisa Haefner, Jordan Hood, Quiren Hu, Ashley Middleton, Denise Monczewski, Masahito Ono, Melissa Preston, Gabriel Sanchez, and Michael Winfrey.
