Rachel Vera Steinberg is a curator based in New York City. Her work explores cultural mythmaking, science fiction, as well as the role of technological shifts in societal meaning making. Since the beginning of her career she has supported experimental practices and the presentation of digital and time-based media. Through her work in New York City nonprofit institutions, she is committed to creating platforms for under-recognized artists.
She is the Curator & Director of Exhibitions at Smack Mellon in Brooklyn, NY where she oversees the production of ambitiously-scaled installations and exhibitions. She was the 2019-2020 fellow at the Curatorial & Research Residency Program at the Julia Stoschek Foundation in Düsseldorf, Germany, where she curated the exhibition JSC ON VIEW: MYTHOLOGISTS (2021-2022). Previously, she was the Director of SOHO20 Artists Inc (2015-2018) and the Assistant Director of NURTUREart Non-Profit Inc (2010-2015), where she founded exhibition and event-based programs centering time-based media and gender equity. She has curated exhibitions locally and internationally. Exhibitions that she has curated have been written about in the New York Times, BOMB, e-flux, Hyperallergic, Artsy, The Brooklyn Rail, and KUBA Paris, among others. She teaches in the Departments of Digital + Media as well as Computation, Technology, and Culture at RISD. She has also taught at FIT and the New School. She has a BFA from Pratt Institute and an MA in Curatorial Studies from Bard College.
