Topics in 2D: Process, Form and Materiality

PUFA 3220; CRN 1924

In this course we will explore what it means to be working in the expanded field of painting, working with a broad array of materials and considering their particular properties, with an emphasis on experimentation. Process, form and materiality is the intersection around which we will hover, with less of an emphasis on making pictures, and more of a focus on how the materials and the means embody the ideas with which we work. We will consider material as metaphor, the relationship of chance to intention, and modes of working with flux, fixity and fluidity. We will look at and discuss a range of contemporary painting practice, with visits to exhibitions and in-class presentations. As this is a studio-based course, there will be both project assignments and in-class projects, where experimentation with materials and processes is expected. We will engage in both group and one-on-one critiques at intervals throughout the semester.
