Born in Louisville, KY, Noel W Anderson is an artist and educator whose work examines the mediated construction of Blackness. He holds an MFA in Printmaking from Indiana University and an MFA in Sculpture from Yale University. Anderson’s practice interlaces historical and contemporary materials—European tapestry, modernist painting, automated systems (televisual, telephonic, and beyond), and Black studies. Through weaving, video, sound, and performance, he transforms traditional textile processes into sites for critically exploring how racial representations are produced, circulated, and consumed. His work interrogates the material and historical effects of oppressive structures while engaging broader dialogues on the expectations placed upon Black performers.

Anderson’s work has been presented in the 12th Berlin Biennale and the 15th Gwangju Biennale. He is the recipient of the NYFA Artist Fellowship, the Jerome Camargo Prize, and a Dieu Donné papermaking residency. His works are included in the permanent collections of the International Center of Photography (New York), The Studio Museum in Harlem, the Hunter Museum of American Art (Chattanooga, TN), and Mudam Luxembourg. Most recently, his solo exhibition Black Excellence opened at the University Art Museum, State University of New York at Albany.
