Call for Submissions

Dear BFA Fine Arts students,

Please consider applying to this fellowship if you are currently 21 years or younger:

2020 Jeffrey Ahn, Jr. Fellowship Preliminary ApplicationThe Jeffrey Ahn, Jr. Fellowship is an annual award for young artists to produce extraordinary independent projects. In providing creative capital to young people, the Fellowship seeks to foster a positive educational and creative process that empowers them to be working artists for a summer, and to experience the freedom and the responsibility that such trust entails.

Founded as a charitable organization in 2012 and funded by a visionary group of Patrons, the Fellowship honors the creativity, independence, and artistic talent of Jeffrey Ahn, Jr. (1995-2012). In 2020, the Jeffrey Ahn, Jr. Fellowship is open to applicants who will be aged 14 through 21 years of age on June 1, 2020.

Fellowship awards are merit-based and open to young artists from any background or country. The 2019 Fellow will be selected by a jury of artists, curators, gallerists, and/or other professionals in arts and publishing, and will be expected to complete a new work or series of works, as proposed in their Fellowship applications, on or before September 1, 2020. In general, preference will be given to projects in the visual fine arts categories of painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, pottery, and sculpture. Exceptionally, in a given year, more than one Fellowship may be awarded.

The Fellowship award will cover some or all expenses related directly to the production of the proposed artwork(s), including but not limited to: cost of materials, relevant museum or gallery admission, studio space, transport, rental of equipment or tools, and/or tuition for the acquisition of a project-specific skill. Requests for exhibition funding are not eligible. Strong applications will give detailed justifications of any significant or unusual expenses in the written Proposal. The maximum award amount in 2020 is $10,000, which may be distributed between more than one winner according to the discretion of the jury and subject to the approval of the board and of the director.

This Phase I section of the 2020 Fellowship application is due by Sunday, December 15th at 5 PM Eastern Standard Time. Selected candidates will be invited to submit additional images and information, as well as an original Fellowship project proposal, for consideration in Phase II (deadline in February 2020).
