Solo Show Opening Reception at Wave Hill
Sunday, July 17, 2 – 4:30 pm

Join me for the opening reception for #dominicanwomengooglesearch in the Sunroom Project Space at Wave Hill. Also opening that day at Wave Hill, an installation by Amie Cunat and the exhibition Nature Pops! I’d love to see you there!

My installation #dominicanwomengooglesearch features cutout images of body parts with stylized tropical-patterned fabrics collaged in their verso. The images come from a Google search for “Dominican women,” resulting in representations that are exotic and obedient to foreign fantasies, yet seemingly assertive and self-confident.
The poor resolution, highly accessible images found online become abstracted in the process of being isolated, enlarged to human scale, pixelated, printed on Sintra board and suspended in the gallery space. Contextualized at Wave Hill’s Sun Porch, the installation evokes the history of exploring, collecting, classifying, and dissecting related to tropical greenhouses. With its fragmented and ever-changing juxtaposition of images, patterns and landscape #dominicanwomengooglesearch destabilizes historic and contemporary representations of an imagined tropical identity.

I’d like to express my gratitude to Wave Hill’s Visual Arts Program, Material for the Arts and the Joan Mitchell Foundation’s Emerging Artist Grant Program, this show wouldn’t have been possible without their support and contributions.

Amie Cunat and I will talk about our individual projects in the Sunroom and the Sun Porch respectively. Please join us!

Smack Mellon Residency
Ongoing Through May 2017

I’ve been selected as a 2016 – 2017 resident artist at Smack Mellon! My residency began in early June. It’s been exciting to settle in, get to know the other residents and staff, and work on the final details of #dominicanwomengooglesearch for the Wave Hill show. I’ll be spending a lot of time at Smack Mellon in Dumbo through May 2017, so let me know if you’re in the neighborhood and we can get together for a studio visit or grab a coffee. Stay tuned for our open studios in late September…I’ll keep you posted!
