Artist Statement

Becca Dugas assembles sculptural hybrids of industrial objects that study the unconscious relationship between individuals and everyday designed objects. Her process begins with sourcing discarded objects (such as car parts, appliances, tools, and toys) by hand from streets and junk yards. In the studio, these found objects are dismantled. Hardware removed, parts separated, pieces broken and bent, until everyday objects are reduced to a supply of nameless forms and contours. Her sculptures, dirty and scrappy, are assembled by combining materials into structures and iterating the nameless forms using cast paper.

Based in discarded material, the work acts as a visual index of past use animated by grease and stains. Through reconfiguring familiar forms that communicate function and purpose, the work challenges the intuitive expectations placed upon objects while revealing their interiority. As 21st century living is abundant with design and technology, Becca questions the physical neutrality of designed objects and structures. She questions how shape, texture, volume, and weight become instruction. Her work urges viewers to intuit and relate to the uncanny forms, to sense the familiar shapes and scales as they encounter the indeterminate assemblies.
