NEWchallenge website design and construction

The 2011-2012 school year is the pilot year of the NEWchallenge, a call for all students at The New School (TNS) to collaborate and solve today’s most pressing social issues in innovative ways with the opportunity to win seed funding to further develop their ideas.

Please see end of page for instructions on how to apply for this position.

The NEWchallenge’s website will serve the following purposes:

Marketing – The website will be a place for people to learn more about the challenge, its rules, and corresponding events.
Application – The website will need to have a way for people to apply to the challenge. There is a website that hosts business plan competitions, http://istart.org/, which may be useful. This can be discussed further upon meeting.
Collaboration – The NEWchallenge strongly encourages students to collaborate with one another. Applicants may crowdsource feedback, support, or anything else through whatever means they see fit. One option is for applicants to crowdsource online, on the NEWchallenge website. Again, this aspect can be further discussed upon meeting.
Voting – There will be a “community choice” finalist chosen through voting open to all students, staff, and faculty at TNS. Voting should be able to be done on the NEWchallenge website.
The NEWchallenge is sponsored and planned by TNSchangemakers, a group of students and faculty that are developing diverse activities to accelerate, broaden, and deepen social entrepreneurship and social innovation education at TNS. We welcome your ideas and insight into how to make the NEWchallenge website as functional and user-friendly as possible.

We are aiming for this website to be live by the last week of October, as the NEWchallenge is scheduled for kick-off in the first week of November. It does not need to be fully functional by the last week of October (please see timeline below for timeline), but will need to be live for marketing and information purposes.

Pay rate: $15/hr
Hours per week: approximately 10 hours in fall

TO APPLY: Preference will be made for qualified work-study students at The New School. Please send cover letter, resume and links to work (if applicable) to Jenny Groza, TNSchangemakers Program Manager, at jenny.groza@gmail.com. This position will be supervised by Professor Michele Kahane (Milano)
