Position: Press Intern (paid) Reporting to: Assistant Director
Time Frame: Summer 2011 (with possible option to extend)
Job Description: The New York Transit Museum seeks a press intern with demonstrated writing skills and social media experience. The candidate must be an undergraduate or graduate student and be able to work 20 hours/week.
Main Purpose: To devise and implement a press and PR strategy that incorporates social media and other marketing techniques in order to increase visibility, membership, and traffic for the Museum.
Key responsibilities:
Create and execute marketing/PR plans for various museum events that incorporate traditional techniques and new media in order to generate press and attendance
Research, prepare, and distribute press releases and other media communications
Contact journalists proactively via telephone and e-mail to follow up on press releases, negotiate news/feature stories, and cultivate relationships
Provide a fast, helpful, and efficient response to external media enquiries with an awareness of media deadlines and knowledge of the Museum’s best interests
Coordinate press-related photo shoots on Museum grounds
Work with Museum staff to identify any newsworthy activities
Update the press contact database, as necessary
Manage the Museum’s social media accounts (Facebook, Twitter, Flickr)
Monitor trends in social media applications and apply that knowledge appropriately towards increasing the use of social media at the Museum
Strategize with the Museum’s social media committee in order to further streamline social media marketing efforts
Experience:
Required
Proficiency in a variety of social media applications (Twitter, Facebook, Flickr, Foursquare, etc.)
Familiarity with New York-based press outlets (print/online)
Experience executing multi-step projects
Preferred
Experience writing press releases
Graphic design ability
Prior museum/nonprofit experience
Skills:

Position: Graphic Design Intern (unpaid; can arrange for college credit)
Time Frame: Summer 2011 (with possible option to extend)
Job Description: The New York Transit Museum seeks a graphic design intern with demonstrated multimedia skills and print design experience. The intern should be available to work 10 hours per week and must have access to design programs on his or her own computer.
Main Purpose: To conceptualize, design, and create print and visual material for various museum programs.
Key responsibilities:
Design print and online materials as needed for museum programs and events including brochures, posters, flyers, invitations, etc. (80%)
Work with archivist to identify historic images and information to incorporate into audio/visual products (5%)
Photograph Museum activities for immediate use in marketing materials, and to build database of images from museum programs and events (10%)
Participate in Social Media Committee meetings (5%)
Experience:
Required
Proficiency in InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop (intern must have access to these programs on his or her own computer)
Previous graphic design experience

Prior museum/nonprofit experience
Filmmaking experience
