Students will gain hands-on experience with a variety of ceramic and clay-like processes, both within the Wet Shops and beyond. We will begin with a comprehensive introduction to traditional ceramics, covering handbuilding techniques, bisque firing, and glaze firing. As students learn the generative lifecycle of ceramic objects, they will then delve into more advanced/experimental methods such as mold making, monotypes on clay, and printed transfers, while also learning about the unique acoustic properties of clay. The course moves beyond the Ceramic studio to explore site based and larger-scale sculptural practices, introducing cellulose/paper-based clays and armature building for work that is not kiln-reliant. Emphasis will shift from the singular sculpture to installation based approaches, with a focus on multimedia and modular elements. Among others, we’ll explore works by Ai Weiwei, Rashid Johnson, Mona Hatoum, Aaron Angell, Raven Halfmoon and Maria Nepomuceno. The semester culminates in an independent project where students have the opportunity to explore their own artistic vision using the processes covered throughout the course.
Faculty Bio:
Leah Wolff (b. 1984) is a visual artist based in NYC. She received her MFA from Columbia University in 2011, and her BFA from Rhode Island School of Design in 2006. Leah participated in several artist residencies including the Cooper Union’s Summer Art Intensive Program Artist Residency (New York, NY), The Artist Studios Program, The Museum of Art and Design (New York, NY), The Wassaic Project Artist Residency Program (Wassaic, NY), Ocean Breeze (Bat Yam, Israel), Byrdcliffe Artists Guild (Woodstock, NY) and the Vermont Studio Center (Johnson, Vermont). In 2012, Leah Wolff co-founded Meta Meta Meta LLC, a collaborative arts organization located in Brooklyn, New York, which produces and facilitates creative activity in the field of visual arts.
Leah Wolff’s work has been featured in New York venues including the International Print Center of New York, The Jewish Museum, Smack Mellon, Lu Magnus gallery, Denny gallery, Peninsula Art Space, Miriam & Ira D. Wallach Art Gallery, Planthouse Gallery, The LeRoy Neiman Gallery and the Fisher Landau Center for Arts. Wolff’s work was also exhibited in Mirus Gallery (San Francisco, CA), Sub Octo Gallery (Philadelphia, PA), AS220 Gallery (Providence, RI), Linda Ross Contemporary (Birmingham, MI), and internationally at 48 Stunden Neukölln (Berlin, Germany), Minshar Gallery and KG45 Gallery (Tel-Aviv, Israel). Recent solo exhibitions of Leah Wolff’s work were held at the The Dirt Palace (Providence, RI) and Scaramouche Gallery (New York, NY).
