Just one month after graduating from Parsons BFA in Illustration, Garrett Pruter’s designs hit the world stage. Pruter was chosen to design this year’s poster for the Macy’s Fourth of July fireworks display, which advertised the world-famous show all over the city.

The opportunity came this past spring, when Pruter entered the Macy’s First Annual Fireworks Design Contest, which was open to submissions from art and design students across New York City. In addition to having his work represented on the poster, Pruter received $10,000 and four VIP tickets to the fireworks show.

His final design represented the patriotism and symbolism of the holiday with a quirky, youthful twist. “I was influenced by my favorite band posters,” Pruter recently told the New York Post. “It’s a little bit rough around the edges, with the hand drawn type and all. It’s not overly polished, not overly designed—it captures this whimsical youthfulness that I think is essential to New York.”
