DOT’s mission is to provide for the safe, efficient, and environmentally responsible movement of people and goods in the City of New York and to maintain and enhance the transportation infrastructure crucial to the economic vitality and quality of life of our primary customers, City residents. - Provide safe, efficient, and environmentally responsible movement of pedestrians, goods, and vehicular traffic on the streets, highways, bridges, and waterways of the City’s transportation network;
- Improve traffic mobility and reduce congestion throughout the City;
- Rehabilitate and maintain the City’s infrastructure, including bridges, tunnels,streets, sidewalks, and highways;
- Encourage the use of mass transit and sustainable modes of transportation; and
- Conduct traffic safety educational programs.Over 5,000 employees of the New York City Department of Transportation oversee one of the most complex urban transportation networks in the world. DOT’s staff manage an annual operating budget of $900 million and a five-year $10.1 billion capital program, along with 6,000 miles of streets and highways, 12,000 miles of sidewalk, and 794 bridges and tunnels, including the iconic East River bridges. DOT’s staff also installs and maintains over one million street signs, 12,700 signalized intersections, over 315,000 street lights, and over 200 million linear feet of markings.Strategic Communications is DOT’s in-house marketing and digital communications office. Working on behalf of the Commissioner, we provide a variety of internal and external communications services. The Strategic Communications team is made up of marketing and digital communications professionals tasked with supporting work across all DOT divisions. We do this through direct services and by leading teams of contracted specialists.Our team is committed to supporting DOT’s mission and program goals through the use of media and digital platforms. We adapt our strategies based on the growing and changing opportunities of our industry. We coordinate, prioritize, and deliver our work to optimize the use of agency resources.
College Aide (Intern) Job Description
Deadline: May 14th
Under the City’s College Aide program, students are permitted to work a maximum of 17 hours per week during academic sessions and 35 hours per week during academic breaks. The Office of Strategic Communications is hiring a College Aide for the spring 2018 semester, with the option to continue throughout the summer and subsequent semesters.
The College Aide will support the agency’s social media presence by developing multimedia content for social media sites, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr, Flickr, YouTube, etc. Under supervision, they will draft and implement strategies to promote public events. Duties also include reviewing social media analytics, including customer questions and comments and preparing summary reports.
The College Aide will regularly participate in the creation agency videography projects. Using agency equipment, they collect video footage of events and projects. They will edit video footage, integrating graphics and audio, to produce clear, compelling, and brand-consistent short films for internal and external use.
The College Aide will assist with agency photography by taking photographs at press events, outreach events, and project sites as assigned. They will edit best-of photo selections for social media channels, project managers and the agency photo archive.
The College Aide will provide support for marketing campaigns. They will write and curate visual content for digital communications across a variety of agency programs. Duties may include assisting in the conceptualization and creation of marketing assets, documenting experiential marketing events in coordination with agency outreach teams, and attending advertising strategy and production meetings with staff and contractors.
