The typography and logo design were the inspiration of Leslie Cain, WireMedia’s Art Director, who holds a BFA in Design & Technology from Parsons. Marcy Rye, who founded WireMedia in 2002 upon graduating with an MFA in Design & Technology from Parsons, provided creative direction. The project, which included creation of a logo and brand identity, website design, and print collateral, was facilitated by desigNYC — a group that forges partnerships between non-profits and designers in NYC.

WireMedia’s logo design for non-profit organization Nostrand Park is one of 21 logos selected to appear in Communication Arts magazine’s 2011 Typography Annual which, according to their website, features “the best typography of the year” from entries around the world.

WireMedia created a custom design of the words “Nostrand Park” based on the concept of “intersections.” The name Nostrand Park is derived from the intersection of Nostrand Avenue and Park Place in Crown Heights, Brooklyn — a diverse neighborhood where very different cultures also intersect. The logo provides a unifying identity that captures Crown Heights’ rich and culturally diverse historical legacy.

The logo serves as a focal point within the community, and gives a firm identity to Nostrand Park. This identity allows them to better attract support from community members and local businesses, and to move forward with their goal of building a better community by bringing together the best of Crown Heights.

View the logo in action on Nostrand Park’s website, on the Communication Arts website, and in the Jan/Feb 2011 printed issue of Communication Arts, page 140.
