“Learning to Disappear” examines the dynamic relationship between artist and subject within the contemporary urban environment. Employing a combination of documentary/street photography and digital manipulation, the project looks at ways in which people react to having their photograph taken, in public, by a stranger, and without their consent.

In this current era of ubiquitous institutional surveillance and social media over-saturation, the project examines peoples’ reaction to the presence of the image-maker within the dense urban landscape.

Nathan Bett Is a Brooklyn based Photographer and masters student at Parsons The New School For Design. Originally hailing from Marquette, Michigan he received his Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from Northern Michigan University in 2004. Before moving to Brooklyn in 2010 he spent six years in Detroit working in advertising and commercial photography at Mid Coast Studio. During this time he traveled the country extensively by van, grip truck, and the occasional airplane collecting photographs, friends, and too many stories to tell.

Now living in Flatbush Brooklyn he spends his time between class at The New School and wondering the streets of New York with his camera. His current work explores the dynamic relationship between subject and viewer within the urban landscape.
