Patti Hallock’s photographs present a vision of the American West that is both haunting and thought-provoking. Hallock’s scenes move from expansive landscapes that convey a sense of possibility and mystery to tightly composed images focusing on details of a particular site. Collectively, her works suggest the aftermath of an adventure; they document the ruins of the West, proposing that the landscape is a site of both progress and deterioration. In her treatment of this terrain, she twins the resourcefulness of the setting with the depletion of those resources. A site of eminent potential ultimately is shown to be a site of quiet collapse.

The West is Here was organized by Adam Lerner and will be on view in the David & Laura Merage Foundation Photography Gallery. This is Patti Hallock’s first solo museum exhibition. The Members Preview will be held on January 19, 2013 from 6–8PM and the exhibition will open to the public on January 20, 2013 for just 10¢ all day.
