MFA Fine Arts Alum Mark John Smith, Opening Reception 6/18 6-8PM
MARK JOHN SMITH: TOTALSMIT
Opening Reception Thursday June 18th. 6pm-8pm
June 18th-July 10th 2015
Through the removal of a bodily presence in the contemporary notion of experience, Mark’s work investigates political and autobiographical implementations of the facade, prejudice and self. Known for his use of language and spray painted soft sculptures, Mark’s work exists in both public and private spaces, museums and galleries. Spray painted gestural marks and handwritten characters, adorn both surfaces of twin duvets, evoking language and methodologies of communication akin to protest. Mark’s digital works bear witness to the assimilation of human action into that of the digital file. Language and the subject from which it is derived become flattened – the body absorbed. Meanwhile, smoke is held infinitely in the space of two monitors.
