metaLAB(at)Harvard is an experimental research unit at the Berkman Center for Internet and Society dedicated to charting innovative scenarios for the future of knowledge creation and dissemination in the arts, media and humanities.

We are looking for a designer/developer to draw on metaLAB’s growing portfolio of web/mobile platforms, especially extraMUROS and Knight News Challenge winner Zeega, to design and build user interfaces and data architectures for the Digital Archive of Japan’s 2011 disasters. This is an initiative of the Edwin O. Reischauer Institute of Japanese Studies at Harvard University, part of a growing international effort to record and archive the communications after, and responses to, the disaster.

Ideal candidates love solving the challenge of inventing new means of navigating vast data sets of multiple media types; feel comfortable building on existing open-source code; and have the ability to think from client to server-side. They love the experimental wireframing phase, but also have a passion for bringing HTML5/JS-intensive user interfaces to life. Familiarity with digital archive work, media archaeology or infoviz is helpful but not essential. Pay is commensurate with experience and time commitment.

All interested applicants, please send a short email with links to relevant work to jesse@metalab.harvard.edu
