Shige “CJ” Suzuki is enroute to Parsons Illustration to present Pushing the Boundary of Manga: Gekiga and Japanese Counterculture.  CJ Suzuki is an Assistant Professor of Modern Languages and Comparative Literature at Baruch College, The City University of New York (CUNY) where he teaches courses in Japan Studies such as Japanese literature, film, and popular culture. In this upcoming presentation Suzuki explores the socio-historical and cultural context of the development of gekiga (non-mainstream manga) by examining the shifting media ecology of the Japanese comics industry, important comics artists and their works, and the overall impact of gekiga on artistic and cultural practices throughout.
