Parsons The New School for Design was invited to participate in a colloquium marking the 300th-year anniversary of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Brussels, Belgium from October 30-31, 2012. Our session on Art, Media and Technology included presentations by Anthony Aziz (Director BFA Fine Arts) on prototyping through a co-locational project between Parsons NY and UdK Berlin that he ran in summer 2012. Juliette Cezzar (Director BFA Communication Design and Design + Technology) discussed the various bifurcations of disciplinary identity and the advantages and implications of a design education that is not limited through nostalgic, discipline-specific definitions but anchored in depth and breadth of knowledge and unique approaches to creativity. Bridget O’Rourke (Director Parsons Europe) moderated the session and discussed global sustainability initiatives that reinforce a continued need for bridging of disciplines and how our view of sustainability can be reframed through increased longevity, fidelity and repair of objects, environments and systems.
