European Literature Night (ELN) is an international event that brings together the spirit of European café culture to New York City, featuring readings performed live from 15 exceptional European books. New York audiences will move from room to room to hear literary works from prominent and up-and-coming European authors whose work allows for the exploration of parallels between European experiences and the current cultural and political climate in America. The event is modeled after its overseas counterpart offering a European style atmosphere where audiences can listen to readings and exchange ideas while enjoying a beer or glass of wine.
The selected books come from countries representing a diverse and varied Europe: Belgium/Flanders, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Greece, Hungary, Latvia, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Spain, Slovakia. Books will be available in a pop up book fair, along with international titles.
This maiden New School-wide endeavor will bring together performers and musicians from the College of Performing Arts (COPA), Mannes and the School of Drama. Drama students will read the excerpts, while Mannes students will perform musical compositions specially created for the readings.
Parsons students have created artworks in response to the literary readings. The prominent galleries within the Czech Center will showcase our students’ work and expose them to an international community that is unique in New York and put them in touch with collectors and potential buyers.
