Communication Design alumna, Alex Lardaro is a New York based Graphic Designer. She received her BFA in Communication Design from Parsons School of Design in 2015. She is currently a Designer at HBO, working for their in-house Design + Production team focusing on branding, concept art and environmental graphics. She sells her own hand-made letterpress stationery on Etsy under her shop AlexLardaroDesign.
Her featured work contains various examples of concept art developed to promote HBO specials and events. Projects kick-off with concept development and research, and a mood board is presented to the team. Then the process moves to sketching and designing, collaborating with an Art Director, getting feedback and iterating on the artwork.
What were your favorite classes at Parsons?
Thesis with Pascal Glissmann and Information Design with William Bevington
What did you wish you knew as a student that you know now?
It has been more valuable to focus on building a unique creative voice and skill set across as many mediums as possible, versus solely specializing in one. As a designer, you want to be as adaptable as possible and an overall creative problem solver for your team or client. And always print your work as early as possible.
Who do you look up to in the design community?
Louise Fili, Jessica Hische, Emily Oberman, Michael Bierut, Jessica Walsh, Jenna Blazevich, and Gemma O’Brian along with colleague, collaborator & best friend Laura Crossin.
What has been the highlight of your career so far?
Landing my current job upon graduation — the same exact job that I told my mom I wanted in 9th grade — and getting to make creative work with good people everyday. That, along with spending time hand-lettering and printing my personal letterpress cards.
