BEIRUT URBAN STUDIO
Course + Workshops + Internships
JUNE 1 – JULY 30 2011

INTERNATIONAL FIELD PROGRAM
The New School Graduate Program in International Affairs

Program Description: The Beirut Urban Studio offers an opportunity for GPIA and Parsons students to conduct field research and participate in internships in the area of digital media, design and technology, post-conflict city building, and other fields related to urban development. The program will be run in partnership with the American University of Beirut, a world-renowned institute, as well as benefit from collaborations with local designers and design studios. Students are required to take the spring course, “City Lab: Beirut NYC,” a hybrid studio and seminar that activates the two cities as labs to prototype urban design research projects that can be implemented in both locations. “City Lab” will be taught in collaboration with an AUB sustainable architecture studio course. Throughout the semester, students in NYC and Beirut will work together remotely via online platforms to share their research methods and exchange feedback.

At the beginning of the field program, GPIA and Parsons students will work directly with their counterparts at AUB in a week-long collaborative design studio that will serve as an immersive orientation to the City. During this studio, students will also participate in workshops with architects, planners and designers engaged in local planning issues. Both in the preparatory course and 1-week design studio, there will be an emphasis on training students to use urban design and architecture-based research methods to conduct visual and spatial research around global urban development issues.

Supervisor: Adriana Valdez Young
Language Requirement: Students are encouraged to audit fall and spring Arabic and French classes.
Workshops and internships will be mostly conducted in English.
