SUMMER 2011 PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
Beirut Urban Studio offers an opportunity for GPIA and Parsons MFA students to conduct field research and participate in internships in the area of digital media, sustainable design, urban agriculture, civic and social media, and other fields related to urban design and civic engagement. The program will be run in partnership with the American University of Beirut, a world-renowned institute, as well as benefit from collaborations with local designers.
NEW YORK
Students are required to take the spring course, “City as Lab: Beirut NYC,” a hybrid studio and research seminar that activates the two cities as spaces to prototype sustainable urban design research projects that apply to both contexts. “City as Lab” will be taught in tandem with an AUB sustainable architecture studio course. Throughout the semester, students in NYC and Beirut will collaborate remotely to share their research methods, design prototypes and exchange feedback.
BEIRUT
At the beginning of the field program, GPIA and Parsons students will work directly with their counterparts at AUB in a week-long collaborative design studio that will serve as an immersive orientation to the City. During this studio, students will also participate in workshops with architects, artists, and designers engaged in local planning issues. Both in the preparatory course and 1-week design studio, there will be an emphasis on training students to use design-based research methods to conduct spatial research using opensource mapping and social media platforms.
Language:
Students are encouraged to audit fall and spring Arabic and French classes.
Course and internships will be conducted mostly in English.
