6th Graders Gaming on the Go, With a Smartphone

Written by:

Mobile Quest is a week-long game design camp where kids make games using Nokia N95 smartphones. Students entering the 6th grade in September 2010 will have the chance to work with professional game designers, creative artists and other experts to learn how to turn great ideas into great games. Mobile Quest introduces campers to basic game design ideas and stresses the importance of teamwork, critical thinking, digital media literacy, and problem solving. Campers will be both mobile and creative— drawing board games, exploring the city, telling stories with pictures and videos, and incorporating all of their materials into games. The camp will run July 26-30, and will be held on the campus of Parsons the New School for Design.

During Mobile Quest, participants will use smart phones, which are phones that know a lot—they take pictures, record video, and use GPS to locate us on maps. The phones offer a toolkit for kids to make games about the city and learn about how smart phones work, how they manage information, and influence the ways we interact with and explore the world all around us.

If you’d like to work and play hard this summer, you’ll love Mobile Quest. No technology or game design experience is needed—just curiosity, creativity and excitement to learn new things with a special Mobile Quest twist!
