Parsons Fine Arts is please to announce the 2011 Graduate Open Studios on Thursday November 15th from 6-9pm. For this one evening, an exciting group of 45 international current graduate students will open their creative spaces to the public. Those who attend will be able to get an insight into the diverse practices happening within a challenging studio art program that embraces interdisciplinary experimentation and innovation. Our open studios event provides a rare opportunity for visitors to preview works in progress and meet the artists in a comfortable and informal setting. Each artist will be present in her or his studio and available to answer questions and discuss their works, that continue to extend the boundaries of contemporary cultural expression.
The MFA in Fine Arts at Parsons is a two-year program committed to expanding the formal, intellectual and conceptual dimensions of emerging artists’ work. In addition to intensive ongoing studio critiques with in-house faculty and peers, students also benefit from interaction with an impressive array of visiting artists and critics who are redefining the cutting edge of art in the 21st century. This years guest include: Vito Acconci, Mariam Ghani, Joan Jonas, Adam Pendleton, Lia Gangitano, Hito Steyerl and Anoka Faruqee.
Parsons The New School for Design is one of the world’s leading centers for teaching and research in the fields of art, design and new media. We offer a challenging and diverse learning environment in which our students engage in studio-based research and critical scholarship and develop a global understanding of the arts. Our students have the opportunity to study and collaborate with faculty and students in a wide range of design fields, as well as those conducting research at the internationally recognized New School for Social Research.
The Fine Arts Program has grown in terms of its faculty in the past years, and revised its Core Curriculum to include Critical Thinking, Thesis Writing and Research as well as Professional Practices. In the Studio Classes the program offers Advanced Practice classes in Painting, Video, installation as well as Feminist Art Practice, Text and Narrative and Eco Literacy in Fine Arts.
