The CUNY Institute for Sustainable Cities and Artist As Citizen are grateful to have been awarded a 2010 NYC Cultural Innovation Fund grant from the Rockefeller Foundation for the development of the City Atlas.

City Atlas is an innovative bottom-up sustainability planning project, allowing average citizens (and some experts, of course) to have a platform to design and share sustainability initiatives for New York City. City Atlas will include both information about the city’s past environmental transformations, and a projection of its potential future, while showcasing the creativity of New Yorkers today.

For the experimental section, Atlas Lab (which will debut as a section in the new website, due to launch in June), they are looking for inspired ideas for improvements that can be implemented and tested in the urban landscape. Possible areas for applied research include transportation, energy, water, waste, sidewalks, roof tops, heat islands, and urban agriculture. Methods for raising awareness on those or related issues are valuable, as are new infrastructure designs. They seek projects that are creative, practical, and efficient.

There are currently a limited number of stipends, in the amount of $200 – $1000, depending on project application. If you or someone you know is doing relevant work in a field related to urban sustainability, they may be able to help you by providing funding for materials or research.
