Visiting Artists Lecture Series: Fia Backström

Fia Backström’s work is based in questions on collective formation and the fabric of the social bond, as worked through image production, pedagogical models, and political and corporate rhetoric, while rethinking the construction of subjectivity and authorship. Her environments, live events and projects challenge our habitual notions of what constitutes an exhibition – its institutional context, its dialogue with the audience, and even the works of art that are presented. Backström turns social situations into operative structures, where works by other artists frequently are incorporated, and where peers, visitors and institutional staff alike are invited to participate.

Backström’s work has been shown in numerous international venues, such as representing Sweden for the Venice Biennale 2011, the Whitney Biennial in 2008, MoMA 2010, White Columns, the Kitchen, Serpentine Gallery, and Moderna Museet. Her writings have been published in magazines such as Artforum, Art on Paper, Pacemaker and North Drive Press.
