ABOUT PHOTOGRAPHY BFA:
Broad Knowledge, Deep Focus
Students sharpen their focus by pursuing a specific concentration, gaining technical mastery and deep knowledge of their area of interest. For instance, students in the fashion track can work in studios and partner with professional models, makeup artists, and clothing designers. Photographers in the Fine Arts concentration learn to cultivate the conceptual insight of a fine art photographer. Students in other concentrations develop the technical skills required of a commercial or editorial photographer. Elective courses in photography and other areas of study throughout The New School help students refine their interests and skills.
Focusing on the Future
The program’s faculty is made up of accomplished artists who help students explore careers in fine art, editorial, and advertising photography, as well as photo editing, art buying, art directing, curating, and publishing. Students benefit not only from their professors’ technical expertise, but from their mentorship and professional experience. Internships play another important part of the Photography BFA program, as students gain real-world experience working with the world’s leading photographers, galleries, magazines, and agencies.
Exposure to Excellence
Graduates from the Parsons Photography program have gone on to be Surface Avant Guardians and Fulbright scholars, honorees of Photo District News’ “PDN 30,” and recipients of numerous accolades.

ABOUT PHOTOGRAPHY MFA:
The graduate Photography program functions as a 21st-century studio and think tank. Students are encouraged to develop their individual vision in a collaborative, interdisciplinary environment and to explore related technologies, focusing on the relationship between concept and production. A rigorous critique process and regular meetings with faculty, professional artists, and visiting critics help students develop individual points of view and situate themselves and their work within larger historical, theoretical, and contemporary visual contexts.
The goal of the 26-month program is to educate students about the evolving creative role of the photographer, particularly in relation to emerging imaging technologies and new media. This curriculum gives students a foundation in both the developing language of photography and the technology driving it. Graduates are prepared to define the creative role of photography within contemporary culture, whether as scholars or practicing artists.
The Parsons photography program is distinguished by the diversity of its participants and of the perspectives and styles they bring to their work. Most applicants accepted to the program have undergraduate or graduate degrees in photography, video, or related media. Those with degrees in an unrelated discipline should have considerable experience working in the field.
