While the beach is a destination spot for activities ranging from volleyball to swimming, there are very serious risks to visitation. Oceanlab educates the community about the life skill of water safety while also connecting city residents with their coastal environment via an educational toolkit. The tool kit includes a website with games, lesson plans, fact sheets, animations, podcasts and an urban game for students, teachers and parents. This interactive learning experience is designed to teach elementary aged students, who are just beginning to go to the beach on their own and live in coastal urban areas of New York City. This project gives kids, families and educators an opportunity to develop their own stories about the beach. Telling their own stories about the environment will empower students to take ownership in their community and become active and educated beach stewards.
