Description

What?

Not For Bots is:

  1. A collection of online software that playfully demonstrate how the Internet is shaping human behavior.
  2. A disruptive model of web design that emphasizes the psychological values of the irrational and unpredictable in our increasingly digital lives.

How?
By subverting online interactions that are taken for granted, the cognitive effects of our faith in technology are made readily apparent.

For Whom?
Web Developers:
Provide open-source software that promote discourse and experimentation regarding online interaction design.
Internet Software Early-Adopters:
Raise awareness of the potential dangers their faith in online technologies have on cognition.

Why?
Concerns about the effects of the Internet on human cognition have not been meaningfully addressed by the designers of online technologies. There is an over-emphasis on promoting a ‘Synaptic’ model of the web focused on real-time, immediate and machine-readable communication without regards to its consequences on users.

Big Questions?
What are the cognitive implications of machine-centric design on the Internet?
Is our growing faith in technology reducing our expectations of the human experience?
