La Bodega Gallery is pleased to present Itinerant Maladies, a solo exhibition featuring the works of multimedia artist Sara Jimenez and curated by Oshun Layne.

Based on an ongoing series of work entitled Maladies, Jimenez explores the relationship between the United States, Spain, and the Philippines during the late 19th and early 20th centuries and the subsequent misrepresentation of the Filipino culture, land, and people. Mending together a mythological site made out of cut, collaged, and painted colonial photography from the Philippines, Jimenez creates an immersive environment embedded with fragmented images of the past. The exhibition space will consist of vertical, organic, layered forms that divide the space into a circular maze. Additionally, Jimenez will exhibit new sculptural and mixed media wall works.

Itinerant Maladies constructs an opportunity for the public to explore Jimenez’s imagination of what the tropics would look like if the trauma from the colonial history were absorbed and visible. There will be public programming and events of invited artists, writers, and performers throughout the exhibition.
