Socrates Sculpture Park Emerging Artist Fellowship ExhibitionOctober 7, 2018 – March 10, 2019

Socrates Sculpture Park

32-01 Vernon Boulevard, Long Island City, Queens, NY 11106

‘The Socrates Annual’ is the culminating exhibition of the Park’s Emerging Artist Fellowship (EAF) program. This year the exhibition features fifteen new public artworks by the Park’s 2018 Artist Fellows: Leilah Babirye, Sherwin Banfield, Amy Brener, Lionel Cruet, Nathaniel Cummings-Lambert, Ronen Gamil, Jesse Harrod, Carlos Jiménez Cahua, Leander Mienarus Knust, Antone Konst, Joiri Minaya, Nicholas Missel, Virginia Lee Montgomery, Nancy Nowacek, Joe Riley & Audrey Snyder.

Minaya presents “Tropticon”, an appropriated backyard greenhouse covered in one-way vision vinyl printed with pixelated botanical images, posing questions of visibility (from the outside in the structure is obscured, whereas from the inside out it functions as a panopticon) while destabilizing the greenhouse’s function as a colonial repository.

PARALLELS AND PERIPHERIES

October 10, 2018 – December 16, 2018

Opening: October 10, 2018, 6 – 9 pm

ArtCenter/South Florida

924 Lincoln Road, Miami Beach, FL 33139

Parallels and Peripheries celebrates eight women artists who challenge the power dynamics between mainstream American society and marginalized communities.

The works examine a range of topics, including stereotypes fueled by migration, race and gender. Each responds to our dramatically shifting cultural and political landscape and its roots in centuries of efforts designed to oppress disenfranchised people. The artmaking is personal, born from the narratives, myths and memories that shape the artists’ – and society’s – identities.

Curated by Larry Ossei-Mensah, the newly named Susanne Feld Hilberry Senior Curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit and Co-Founder of ARTNOIR,  Parallels andPeripheries features artists Bethany Collins, Lizania Cruz, Genevieve Gaignard, Susan Lee-Chun, Joiri Minaya, Jamilah Sabur, Saya Woolfalk, and Kennedy Yanko.
