BFA Alum Joiri Minaya To Feature In Multiple Shows

Joiri Minaya, BFA Fine Arts ’13, is having her works featured in the following shows, and invites you to join any and all of the receptions and shows to which you are able to attend:

Gardens of the Mind
October 6, 2017 – December 18, 2018
Opening reception: Thursday, October 5, 6 pm
African American Museum in Philadelphia

Using large scale installation, sculpture, painting, photography and printmaking, artists Barbara Bullock, Martha Jackson Jarvis, E.J. Montgomery, Joiri Minaya and Glynnis Reed examine links between history, memory, and the natural environment. The artists consider our relationship with nature and how the mind itself is a field, which is developed and nurtured to promote creative, spiritual and intellectual growth. More info here.

Re: Encounter
Dede Brown and Joiri Minaya
October 13, 2017 – November 12, 2017
Opening reception: Oct 13, 6 pm
National Art Gallery of the Bahamas

Villa Doyle, West and West Hill Streets, Nassau, N.P., The Bahamas

Re: Encounter brings together Dominican-born, New York-based artist Joiri Minaya and Bahamian artist Dede Brown, who have developed new works that continue the trajectory of their practices that speak towards issues of being postcolonial subjects. Each artist uses feminized forms of representations found in nature and the female body to confront patriarchy, the rigidity of history and the stronghold and cautions of colonial narratives.
More info, including a beautifully written, in depth release by curator Holly Bynoe, here.

Containers as part of the exhibition Call & Response
October 21, 2 pm – 4 pm
Wave Hill
675 W 252nd St, Bronx, NY 10471

Spread around the Monocot garden wearing “tropical” pattern bodysuits, several women hold poses predetermined by the shape of the suit they wear. Site-specific narratives coming out of concealed speakers will meditate on immigration, landscape, camouflage, assimilation, otherness, refusal (of the gaze, of the availability of one’s image) obfuscation and (in)visibility.
During silence in between “posing shifts,” performers can take the mask or other parts of their suits off, stretch, talk to audience members or change location before their next shift when the audio restarts.
Call & Response, honors the tenth anniversary of Wave Hill’s Sunroom Project Space, focusing on site-specificity as it relates to the projects that have been exhibited there.
